National Philanthropic Trust to Administer Atkins Foundation

The National Philanthropic Trust, an independent public charity that manages more than $500 million and has disbursed more than $235 million in grants to charities in the United States and abroad, has announced that it has been been named to administer the Dr. Robert C. Atkins Foundation.

NPT, which will oversee all day-to-day administration, management, and grantmaking at the foundation, also announced that it has enlisted Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors to assist it in furthering the foundation's mission to create a legacy of value, impact, and substance in the areas of nutrition, diabetes, and illnesses stemming from obesity. To that end, NPT has already made a grant to endow the Dr. Robert C. Atkins professorship in medicine and obesity research chair at Washington University in St. Louis and has approved funding of clinical studies using nutrition interventions to be conducted by Harvard University, Ben Gurion University, Johns Hopkins University, Rogosin Institute-Rockefeller University, and the University of Southern California.

The foundation, which was created by the famed diet doctor and his wife, Veronica, more than three years ago, recently received a bequest of $40 million from the estate of Atkins, who died in April 2003, and is expected to receive substantial bequests from the estate in the future.

"I'm thrilled to authorize a gift of $40 million from my husband's estate to the foundation and to entrust the National Philanthropic Trust as the steward of those funds," said Veronica Atkins. "NPT has an unparalleled track record of successfully attaining philanthropic goals and the grantmaking expertise to realize the charitable missions of the Dr. Robert C. Atkins Foundation."
