Study Name: A Novel Nutritional Approach to Prevent Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease in Low Income Hispanic Families
Summary: This research project is developing and implementing a dietary intervention program designed specifically for overweight Hispanic youth in order to reduce their risk for Type II diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The novel intervention will focus on modification of carbohydrate intake (reduced sugar and soda, increased fiber and whole grain intake) using an individualized, healthy exchange system and motivational interviewing. The hypothesis is that modification of the quality of carbohydrate intake will lead to a significant reduction in insulin secretion and an improvement in insulin resistance that will have positive effects on reducing risk for Type II diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The results of this two-year initial pilot study will be used to design longer and more detailed studies incorporating weight loss and physical activity combinations for optimal and cost-effective interventions for achieving sustainable healthy weight and risk reduction in this high-risk understudied population.
